The month of August is full of great events happening at the Cheboygan Area Public Library.
First, the Friends of the Library will be offering the Gift of Reading to every child who stops by their booth at the Cheboygan County Fair’s Family Fun Day 11 am-2 pm Monday, Aug. 8. The Gift of Reading is just what it sounds like — a free book for every child.
This event will be taking place at the Cheboygan County Fairgrounds and there will be lots of other great organizations providing information and hands-on activities (great for kiddos 0-12, but older siblings are welcome, too) as part of MSU Extension’s Project Connect event
Project Connect brings together many Health and Human Services organizations that offer great services to the community. Be sure to stop by and find out all the great family resources available in Cheboygan. Kids may even have the opportunity to win all-day ride bracelets.
On Aug. 11 at 6 pm, the Cheboygan Area Public Library will also be offering a “Meet the Poet” event with poet Arra Lynn Ross. You will be able to meet the poet, hear about her life and writing experiences, and enjoy a reading of her poetry.
Born on a rural commune in Minnesota, Arra Lynn attended Macalester College and earned a Ph.D from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She also taught creative writing at Saginaw Valley State University. Arra Lynn has two published poetry books “Day of the Child” and “Seedlip and Sweet Apple,” both published by Milkweed Editions, plus her poetry has appeared in numerous publications including “Antioch Review,” “Birmingham Poetry Review,” “Denver Quarterly ,” and many others.
Another fun opportunity for kids of all ages and families too, is an outdoor movie being shown in the Cheboygan Library’s Children’s Garden. As part of the “Oceans of Possibilities” theme, the movie will be Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon” (hint: the last dragon is a WATER dragon.) and the showing will take place on Friday, Aug. 12. The movie will start at dark, which is estimated to be around 8:30 pm The film runs 1 hour and 47 minutes and is rated PG.
The library will be providing Kingston theater popcorn, but anyone is welcome to bring their own snacks as well. Plus, everyone is encouraged to bring their own camp chairs or blankets to sit on.
A “Meet a Mermaid” and Summer Reading Wrap-Up Party will be the next event on the calendar. Mermaid Phantom will be swimming into the Library on Monday, Aug. 15, at 6 pm, where she (fish tail and all) will read a story and announce the Summer Reading Challenge winners as well as give away a few other goodies.
A new drawing class session will also take place on Monday, Aug. 15. The class will run 10 am-11:30 am and will explore various aspects of drawing by using still-life techniques. The class, taught by art instructor Kimberly Liedel-Ross, will take place as a four-day workshop on Mondays, Aug. 15, 22, 29, and Sept. 12. The workshop fee is $20 per participant, which includes all supplies and the four days of instructions. The class is open to ages 9 to adults. Registration is required, which can be done by calling 627-2381 or stopping by the library during regular hours.
The last event in August will be a Blood Drive on Aug. 18 from 1-6:45 pm with Versiti Blood Centers of Michigan. Walk-ins are welcome but appointments are preferred. You can make an appointment by calling 627-2381 or stopping by the Cheboygan Library. You can also make an appointment by calling Versiti Blood Centers at 866-642-5663 or visiting Versiti.org/michigan and searching for sponsor code “Cheboygan Public Library.”
On another health note, the Cheboygan Area Public Library has free at-home COVID-19 tests available. These tests are available from the staff at the front desk during regular hours and you do not need a library card to get them. Please note, if you have had any known exposure or are experiencing any symptoms, please mask up and/or use the curbside pickup the library provides. To use curbside, just park in one of the dedicated parking spaces in the main parking lot and call the library. The phone number is posted on the parking sign if you need it. And a staff member will run kits out to you.
The Cheboygan Area Public Library is open Monday through Wednesday from 10 am to 8 pm; Thursday from 8 am to 7 pm; Friday from 8 am to 5 pm; Saturday from 10 am to 3 pm; and Sunday from 1 pm to 5 pm
