Advanced scanning and imaging technologies have revealed new objects and sketches contained in Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece The Milkmaid.

The research has discovered “revealing insights” into the Dutch master’s technique as a painter and his portrayal of tranquility and simplicity that defines his work.

Next March the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam will hold the largest ever exhibition of Vermeer’s work, showing 27 out of his 35 known paintings. Taco Dibbits, the museum’s director, said that curators and researchers had been stunned to make such revealing discoveries, “bringing viewers ever closer to this most mysterious and beloved artist”.
