Zamariyon Kendall transfers to Lausanne

Zamariyon Kendall gets a rush of excitement when Lausanne football coach Kevin Locastro begins to draw plays. But when Kendall picks up a pencil, he exceeds simple X’s and O’s.

From surprising his family with his singing voice in church to shining on the baseball field, Kendall’s talents go beyond football.

The one talent he considers his prized possession is drawing.

“Drawing brings back childhood memories for me,” Kendall said. “I used to always draw as a kid and I was really good. So, when I do it now it makes me feel like a super little kid again.”

Kendall is No. 11 on The Commercial Appeal’s Dandy Dozen, a collection of the top Memphis area high school football players for the Class of 2023 as picked by the newspaper.

Kendall is a three-star running back and transfer from Henry County. He is the No. 48 prospect in the state and No. 86 running backs in the country.

He rushed for 156 yards on 35 carries a year ago after running for 487 yards as a sophomore.

Zamariyon Kendall is an artist in his free time. He's also a running back for Lausanne.

To begin his drawing process, Kendall finds a photograph of himself or a family member. He takes a lead pencil and starts to sketch the outline of the image.

After his sketch is complete, he adds character to the picture by using color pencils and markers.

His favorite image he has created is a picture of himself stiff-arming another player in a game. Kendall turned the image into a puzzle piece. He said when he looks back on it, he thinks to himself, “Wow, I can’t believe I actually did that.”
